Securing your financials today can be a daunting task. Thieves have become increasingly sophisticated making identity theft a serious threat.
Here are some ways to protect yourself:
At home
Shred loan applications, credit card preapproval letters, and checks sent to you by your credit card company before you throw them away.
Never give out your social security, bank account , or credit card number over the phone when you did not initiate the call.
Beware of online scams. Make sure your computer’s security is up to date, remember never to open emails from people you don’t know, and always properly destroy unwanted computers and mobile devices so that information can’t be lifted.
Always check your statements when you receive them. If your statement is ever late, call your bank or credit card company immediately.
Install a locked mailbox to prevent mail theft.
When you’re out
Leave your social security card and birth certificate at home. These things should never be kept in your wallet.
Secure your wallet & purse whenever you’re dining out. Never leave it on a table, counter, or seat while you’re away from your seat.
Keep an eye on your credit or debit card when paying at a store or restaurant. If you believe you see your card being copied or swiped through more than one machine, contact a manager immediately.
